Zack Settel

Zack Settel started playing and writing music early on, studying classical piano and electronic music, and performing in rock and jazz groups. He received a BFA in Music Composition from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), where he studied composition with Mortons Subotnick and Feldman. In 1986, Settel went to work at the Institute for Research and the Coordination of Acoustics and Music (IRCAM), headed by Pierre Boulez, where he remained until 1995, composing and working in music production and research. From 1997-99 Settel was an assistant professor at McGill University where he chaired the Music Technology area. Focusing on immersive audio in 2004, Settel began a five-year research/creation collaboration with McGill’s Center for Intelligent Machines (CIM), during which he realized several creations, while co-directing advanced degree students. From 2003-2008, Settel founded and directed the immersive audio research group at the Societé des Arts Technologiques (La SAT), where he remains as artist and researcher in immersive audio and music. In addition to his research and creation activities, Settel teaches at the Arts and Science faculty at the University of Montreal (UdM), where he offers master-level courses in immersive audiovisual arts.

PRESENTATION

The Motus Domum Experience

A live full-dome interactive music and dance performance work, featuring a pair of dancers, local (dome) and remote dancers and audience. The title, Motus Domum refers to House of Movement. The work features high-definition interactive music, and advanced live motion capture of dancers.

Presented by Zack Konate (Zack Settel) and co-created with Osman Zeki and Peter Trosztmer. Peter is an award-winning dancer and choreographer – Most notably: his first choreography “Synthesis as Composure – Painful but unequivocal truth” was revered as of 5 top shows of 2006 in the Montreal Hour and La Press. His 3rd and most personal work Eesti: Myths and Machines: was again noted as one of the highly esteemed shows of 2012 by the Voir Montreal. His work on the multimedia 4DART piece Norman also obtained many accolades and toured extensively winning an Angel Award at the Brighton Festival UK (2009) and best performance Toronto Star. Peter continues to define his place as a creator who is invested in work that is sensitive, deeply researched and physically realized. His co-authored article “Collaboration as Practice The Winding Road” was presented at the Canadian Society for Dance Scholars Conference 2012. Peter is current research is focused on his work with Zack Settle (artist in residence at LA SAT) and Osman Zeki (Creative technician and programmer). Together they have developed two groundbreaking immersive works using movement tracking and augmented reality. Peter is artist in residence at Techno Lith – New City Gas in Griffintown where he created and performed what have become his signature works “5 out of 6 Machines” and #boxtape. After receiving his B.A. in Classics, Peter studied at the Concordia University Department of Contemporary Dance before moving to Toronto to complete the School of the Toronto Dance Theatre training program. Since then, he has distinguished himself as an interpreter of the highest caliber and has worked and continues to collaborate with many national and international choreographers.
