PRESENTATION

Space Mics from Flatland

A new form of spatial microphone array, using massive numbers of MEMS microphones allows content creators to capture full-sphere audio in professional quality in a simple, practical and economical setup. In the past decade or two, MEMS microphones have become available with increasingly high quality. Thanks to their low cost and the efficiency of standard electronic production methods, it is possible to create arrays with massive numbers of microphones at an affordable price. The demonstration will showcase an array of 84 microphones distributed over both sides of a disc, 17 cm across and less than 6 mm thick. It comes with a USB interface and software which supports many kinds of workflows, including field recording, studio recording and live sound production. The demonstration will cover the theory of operation behind the array, its hardware and software design and the resulting features and specifications. The array and its software will be demonstrated and depending on the equipment available at the venue, recorded sound examples will be played back to demonstrate its spatial recording capabilities.
