James Monroe is at the helm of MOS’s nationally renowned brand of adult programming, SubSpace, delivering informal, public science engagement through an artistic lens.
Built upon the mission of redefining the role a science museum should play in the lives of adults from all communities and amplifying marginalized voices in STEM, the Museum of Science’s brand of public programming, SubSpace, has become a tool in changing the landscape of who can and should engage with science museums. Fusing together art, science, and technology, and taking a backseat to community partners, artists and voices, the Museum has begun the long work of changing the narrative around who it represents through SubSpace’s inclusive programming, which is anchored in opening up its immersive theater spaces to new community partnerships. It is the vision, trust, and work of these community partners that have allowed this brand of public programming to flourish, and is helping to turn the Charles Hayden Planetarium and Mugar Omni Theater into two of the city’s most exciting live immersive performance venues through award-winning drag programming, live music performances, premiere theatrical productions, eGaming tournaments, VR-musical theater experiences, community film screenings, and more.
